Home/Golf Gift Baskets: Build One, Do Not Buy One

Golf Gift Baskets: Build One, Do Not Buy One

The short version: build it yourself. Pre-made golf gift baskets are mostly padding, because the maker has to fill a large container to a price and golf items are small and expensive. Buy four or five things a golfer actually uses, put them in something he will keep, and it costs about the same and looks considered rather than bought.

Four rules before you buy anything

  • Volume is the enemyA big basket has to be filled, and the filler is where the money goes and the quality drops.
  • One good thing beats six token onesPick an anchor, then add small things around it.
  • Everything should be usable on a courseIf it only works at home, it belongs in a different present.
  • The container countsA bag he will reuse reads better than wicker he will throw away.

Start with one anchor

One item that would be a decent gift on its own. Everything else arranges around it.

1

A dozen of the ball he already plays

The strongest anchor there is. Read the name off a ball in his bag and buy that one, roughly $20 to $35 for most models and $50 to $60 for premium tour balls. Everything else in the basket arranges itself around the box.

Gets the basket to feel like a golf gift immediately.

2

A box of bars, split across the basket

Ours, so judge it accordingly. 10th Tee PLUS+ is $22.99 for a box of 12, which is $1.92 a bar. Put four in the basket and the remaining eight go in his bag, which is where they were going to end up anyway. 1st Tee PLUS+ is $26.99 if you want the calmer one for the first tee.

Splitting a box is the cheapest way to make a basket look full honestly.

3

Jerky for the golfer who will not eat anything sweet

1st Tee grass-fed beef jerky is $59.99 for a box of 8 bags, $7.50 a bag. Two or three bags in a basket is plenty and the rest is his for the season.

Also ours. Free US shipping over $98 across the whole order.

4

Two gloves in his size

$15 to $30 each and nobody keeps a spare. Check the glove in his bag for the size and which hand before you buy.

The one item here that needs a size.

Then four or five small things

Cheap, used constantly, and the reason the basket looks full without padding.

5

A hundred tees

About $8 to $15 and more than he will use in a season. The single best value item that goes in one of these.

Fills space without being filler.

6

A divot tool and two ball markers

$10 to $25. Small, metal, feels more expensive than it is.

Avoid novelty shapes, they stay in the drawer.

7

A sunscreen stick

$8 to $15 and applied one handed on the tee, which is why a stick beats a bottle for golf.

Four hours outdoors and most golfers carry none.

8

Blister tape or plasters

$5 to $10. Unromantic and quietly the most used thing in the basket by August.

Goes in the pocket of the bag and stays there.

9

A towel with a carabiner

$15 to $30. The clip is the part that matters, because a loop is how towels get lost.

Dark colours, for obvious reasons.

Finish it

The parts that make it read as deliberate.

10

A hat from the course he plays

$25 to $40 from his own pro shop. Not a famous course he has never visited, the one he actually plays.

Skip fitted sizes unless you know them.

11

A handwritten note with a tee time already booked

Costs the price of the round and turns a basket of objects into a plan. Green fees run $40 at a municipal course to $200 at a resort.

This is the part people remember.

12

The container, chosen on purpose

A shoe bag, a cooler bag or a shag bag he will reuse, rather than wicker. $15 to $35 and it stays in service after the contents are gone.

The difference between a present and a hamper.

Four things to leave out

  • Pre-made baskets padded with chocolate. You are paying golf prices for supermarket confectionery and a lot of shredded paper.
  • Novelty items with a golf shape. Golf shaped soap, golf shaped sweets, a golf shaped anything. Photographed once, used never.
  • Anything glass. It is going in a car and often onto a course, where most clubs ban it anyway.
  • Branded kit from a course he has no connection to. A logo means something to the person who played there and nothing to anybody else.

A basket that works is usually four things and a container, not twelve things and a bow. Pick the anchor first and stop when it looks full.

We make golf nutrition, so the bars and jerky above are ours and you should weigh them accordingly. Nothing else on this page is something we sell.

For the wider list sorted by price, read the full gift guide. In December the thing that decides the purchase is delivery, which is covered in golf Christmas gifts.

Golf gift baskets: common questions

What do you put in a golf gift basket?

One anchor item and four or five small ones. The anchor is usually a dozen of the ball he already plays or a box of bars; the small things are tees, a divot tool, sunscreen, blister tape and a towel. Five well chosen items beat twelve token ones.

Is it cheaper to make your own golf gift basket?

Usually it is about the same money and noticeably better contents. A pre-made basket has to fill a large container to a price, and because golf items are small and expensive the filler ends up being confectionery and shredded paper.

What should you not put in a golf gift basket?

Anything glass, anything novelty shaped, and branded kit from a course he has no connection with. Glass is banned on most courses, novelty items get used once, and a logo only means something to the person who played there.

How much does a golf gift basket cost to build?

Around $60 to $120 for a good one. An anchor at $20 to $35, four small items at roughly $10 each, and a container at $15 to $35. Spending more than that usually means buying a second anchor rather than better filler.

Can you put food in a golf gift basket?

Yes, and it is one of the few things certain to get used, provided it survives four hours in a hot bag. Ours is $22.99 for a box of 12 bars, which is $1.92 each, so a few go in the basket and the rest go in the bag. We make these, so weigh that accordingly.
