Home/Golf Gifts for Men: 13 That Get Used

Golf Gifts for Men: 13 That Get Used

The short version: buy what runs out, or buy an experience. The safest gifts are a dozen of the ball he already plays, gloves in his size, or a pro shop gift card. The best one is an hour with a PGA professional, which almost no golfer books for himself. Clubs and apparel are where this goes wrong, because both need information you probably do not have.

We make golf nutrition, so two of the thirteen below are our category. This list is sorted by how much you know about his game rather than by price, because that is what actually decides which gifts are safe. For the price-band version, see the full gift guide.

Start here

Three tiers, and the honest answer is usually the first.

  • You know he plays golf and not much elseStick to consumables and gift cards. Everything in the first group below is safe without knowing a single specification.
  • You have seen inside his bagYou can now buy the right ball, the right glove size and kit that suits how he actually plays.
  • You know his course and his calendarBuy an experience. This is where the genuinely memorable gifts are, and they need a date more than they need a budget.
  • When in doubt, go down a tierA perfect gift from the first group beats a guessed one from the third, every time.

If you know nothing about his game

Five things that cannot miss.

1

A dozen of the ball he already plays

Look in the bag, read the name off the side of the ball, buy twelve of that. It is the most used golf gift there is and the only way to get it wrong is to substitute a ball you have heard of. Premium tour balls are roughly $50 to $60 a dozen, everything below that about $20 to $35.

Works because: he loses them faster than he replaces them, every year.

2

Two gloves in his size

Gloves die from sweat, not wear, and almost every golfer is playing in one that has gone slick. Around $15 to $25 each. Right-handed players wear it on the left hand.

Works because: nobody buys their own spare, and the spare is the useful one.

3

A gift card to his own club's pro shop

The least romantic thing on this page and the most used. At a club shop it usually covers range balls and lessons as well as kit, so it cannot be the wrong size or model.

Works because: it buys the boring things he actually runs out of.

4

Food that survives a hot bag

Four hours, no fridge, and the turn is not always open. This is the category we make. The 10th Tee PLUS+ bars are $22.99 for a box of 12 and the 1st Tee PLUS+ bars are $26.99, both twelve to a box.

Works because: it gets eaten, which is more than most gifts manage.

5

A bulk bag of tees and a decent towel

Together about $25 to $40. Both are weightless, both are constantly lost, and running out of either ruins a morning.

Works because: it is impossible to already own too many.

If you have seen inside his bag

Four that need one specific fact.

6

A rope hat or the cap he would actually pick

Hats are the one piece of golf kit men genuinely enjoy being given, because the style turns over and the current one is sweat stained. Roughly $30 to $45. Look at what is already on his head first.

Needs you to know: rope brim, flat brim and classic are three different people.

7

A box of jerky for the season

Eight bags rather than one, which is the difference between a treat and something permanently in the bag. Our grass-fed beef jerky is $59.99 for a box of 8, so $7.50 a bag, at 13g to 17g of protein an ounce.

Needs you to know: it is salty, 380mg to 600mg an ounce, which is normal for jerky and worth saying.

8

An entry level rangefinder

The equipment most likely to actually lower his scores, because most poor approach shots are the wrong club rather than a bad swing. Entry models start around $100 to $150.

Needs you to know: whether he already uses a GPS watch or a phone app.

9

A technical polo in his brand and size

Around $60 to $120, and worn more often than any other golf apparel. This is only a safe gift if you can physically read the label in something he already owns.

Needs you to know: brand and size, both, read off a real garment.

If you know his course and his calendar

Four experiences, and the best gift on the page.

10

An hour with a PGA professional

The best gift on this page by a distance. It is the only one that changes how he plays rather than what he carries, and it is the thing almost every golfer keeps meaning to book and never does. Commonly $60 to $150 for a single lesson.

Go further: buy three. One lesson diagnoses a problem, three actually change it.

11

A tee time at a course he has not played

Book the time, do not hand over a voucher he then has to organise. Green fees at a good public course often sit between $50 and $150 off peak.

Go further: book two slots and go with him.

12

A full bag fitting

A fitting measures what he actually swings and usually finds two or three clubs working against him. Commonly $150 to $400, and many fitters credit the fee against a purchase.

Go further: pick an independent fitter rather than a single brand.

13

Two nights and two rounds somewhere new

The gift golfers still talk about years later, and the only one here with no sensible upper limit.

Go further: agree the dates with him before you book anything.

What not to buy him

  • Clubs he has not been fitted for. The most expensive way to get this wrong, and he will never tell you.
  • Novelty and gag golf items. Funny once in the room, then in a drawer forever.
  • Apparel when you are guessing the size. Read the label in something he owns, or buy something else.
  • Training aids he did not ask for. They read as a comment on his swing whether you meant that or not.

If you know nothing: a dozen of his ball, or a pro shop gift card. If you know his course: a lesson.

Across all three tiers the rule holds. Buy the thing that gets used up or the thing that gets booked, and leave the equipment to the man swinging it.

Golf gifts for men: common questions

What is the best golf gift for a man who already has everything?

A lesson with a PGA professional or a tee time at a course he has not played. A golfer who owns all the equipment still has not booked a lesson this year. If it has to be an object, buy a consumable: balls, gloves, tees and food run out regardless of how much kit someone owns.

What golf gifts do men actually use?

The things that get used up. Balls, gloves, tees, towels and food are consumed every round and replaced constantly. The gifts that sit unused are almost always clubs bought without a fitting, apparel bought without a size, and novelty items.

How much should you spend on a golf gift for him?

Under $25 buys consumables he will genuinely use. $25 to $50 buys those in quantity or a pro shop gift card. $50 to $150 buys a lesson or a round, which is where gifts start beating objects. Above $150 buys a fitting. Spending more does not improve the gift, it just moves you into categories that are easier to get wrong.

Is it safe to buy golf clubs as a gift?

Generally no, unless he has been fitted and has told you the exact club he wants. Clubs are fitted to a swing, and the wrong shaft or lie angle makes a player worse. Buying the fitting itself is the better version of the same gift.

What is a good golf gift for a man under $25?

A dozen of the ball he plays, two gloves in his size, a bulk bag of tees, a plain waffle towel, or food that survives a hot bag. Our 10th Tee PLUS+ bars are $22.99 for a box of 12, which is $1.92 a bar.
